The All-New Audi A7 Sportback Crossover - Coming Soon to the Audi Family

Audi has been expanding its model lineup to compete in the popular crossover market. Audi has recently unveiled the all-new 2011 Audi A7 Sportback which blends the luxurious size of the new Audi A8 with a bolder, sportier exterior design. The A7 Sportback will give Audi its first such model in this market and help reach new buyers.

The key design element of the A7 Sportback is the sleek roofline which will likely reduce interior space to position the new model between the A8 and the mid-size Audi A6. With an aggressive look similar to the A5, the exterior design will put the new A7 Sportback right about against other four-door luxury coupes on the market like the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and the all-new Jaguar XF. Like the exterior design, the cabin of the A7 Sportback should help define the sporty nature of the car with a look noticeably different from the A8. Matching the rounder body lines, the interior has a much softer look to it than the A8 especially in regard to the new center console area and the instrument cluster. The most identifiable design cues of the A7 Sportback’s interior is what Audi refers to as a “wave-like” wood accent strip that cuts through the middle of the dash.

One of the coolest elements of the new A8, the roof-mounted LED ambient lighting, will also be an option in the A7 Sportback, but Audi’s latest version of the multimedia interface (MMI) will help improve the driver experience. After making its debut in the new A8, the new MMI will feature the capability to recognize handwriting allowing allows drivers to "write" letters with their fingers on a pad next to the MMI controls instead of scrolling through the letters on the screen using a conventional control knob (although this is also available). Key options will include a 1,300-watt, 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and a new heads up display system that projects information onto the windshield.

Audi says that the A7 Sportback will be available with four engines and the choice of front- or all-wheel drive, but the most likely scenario for U.S.-spec models is the 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 paired with Audi’s quattro permanent all-wheel drive as the only configuration. This engine produces an impressive 333 horsepower, but if Audi decides to offer a sportier S7 Sportback down the road, it could use the high-revving 4.2-liter V-8 shared with the A8.

Although no pricing or a release date is officially set for the all-new 2011 Audi A7 Sportback, expectations are that it will go on sale early next year. 2010 Audi A4 & Q5 Models Earn Insurance Institute TOP SAFETY PICK Rating

Audi of America announced that the Q5 and A4 models earned 2010 TOP SAFETY PICK ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The two best-selling Audi models join the Audi A3 in achieving the highest safety recognition granted by the influential IIHS.

"Safety is a leading criterion for customers wishing to purchase a luxury vehicle," said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. "It is an important step that now three Audi vehicles are designated with TOP SAFETY PICK ratings, the highest number for a German luxury brand. In particular, the A4 and Q5 models are our highest selling nameplates, whose value is only increased by these IIHS results."

For the 2010 model year and beyond, IIHS included a new rollover roof strength test. To earn TOP SAFETY PICK recognition, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of good for roof strength in rollover crashes. To measure roof strength, a metal plate is pushed against one corner of a vehicle's roof at a constant speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle's weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio. This is a good assessment of vehicle structural protection in rollover crashes.

A vehicle earning a good rating can withstand a force equal to at least 4 times the vehicle's weight. Current federal standards require a vehicle’s roof to withstand 1.5times total weight.

TOP SAFETY PICK also recognizes the vehicles that earn the highest rating of good for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, and that have electronic stability control, which is standard on all of these models.

Audi Models Eligible for 2010 Tax Credit

The Energy Policy Act stipulates several other caveats for hybrid tax eligibility. However, these requirements are typically not difficult to meet for the average driver. For example, alternative fuel tax credits are only extended to the original owner of a vehicle. As such, if you were to purchase a used 2010 model vehicle, then you would not be able to claim a tax credit.

Audi R8 V10 named 2010 World Performance Car

The Audi R8 V10 was named as the 2010 World Performance Car at the World Car of the Year Awards ceremony at the New York Auto Show. This is the second time that the R8 has won the World Performance Car award: the V8-powered R8 took this award in 2008.

Developed jointly with quattro GmbH, the Audi R8 V10 is powered by a 5.2 liter direct injection ten-cylinder engine which develops 386 kW (525 hp), enabling it to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 3.9 seconds and then to a top speed of 316 km/h (196.35 mph). It features Audi technologies such as quattro permanent all-wheel drive, a lightweight aluminum body and the innovative all-LED lights.

This is the second World Performance Car award win for the Audi R8: the original V8-powered version won the same award in 2008. Whether a customer chooses an R8 with a V8 or a V10 engine, they will get a World Performance Car award winner.

The Art of Progress. The 2010 Audi A8

Audi has launched the next generation of the A8 – the sportiest sedan of the luxury class sets new standards. Before entering an intersection, the system activates the cornering light, which provides wider-angle illumination and thus enhances safety.
